Capacity Assessment

Capacity assessments are essential evaluations conducted to determine an adult's ability to make informed personal and financial decisions. At Moroz Child Psychology Group, we offer comprehensive capacity assessment services to assist individuals, families, and legal representatives in understanding an adult's decision-making capabilities

What is a Capacity Assessment?

A capacity assessment evaluates whether an adult can:

  • Understand relevant information when making decisions.
  • Appreciate the potential consequences of their decisions.

These assessments are crucial when there are concerns about an individual's ability to manage personal or financial matters, often due to medical conditions, cognitive impairments, or mental health issues.

Our Assessment Process

Our approach to capacity assessments is thorough, respectful, and tailored to each individual's unique circumstances. The process typically involves:

Initial Consultation: We meet with the client and relevant parties to discuss concerns, gather background information, and explain the assessment process.

  1. Assessment Sessions: Through interviews we evaluate the individual's understanding of information and ability to appreciate the consequences of decisions.
  2. Collateral Information: We may consult with family members, caregivers, or other professionals to obtain additional insights into the individual's daily functioning and decision-making history.
  3. Form Completion: The appropriate government document for the situation is completed to support next steps in the process.

Note: A medical note from a doctor ruling out temporary or reversible conditions that may affect decision-making abilities is required prior to the assessment.

Timeframe and Commitment

The duration of a capacity assessment can vary based on the complexity of the case and the individual's specific needs. Typically, an initial session and follow up assessment session, totaling approximately two hours would be expected.

Our Expertise

Our team includes professionals trained and designated as capacity assessors in Alberta. We adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT) and ensure that our practices align with the Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act.
