Johnnie is a Registered Provisional Psychologist and a member of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta. His interest in psychology was shaped early in life through exposure to complex social and environmental challenges, which led him to reflect deeply on why individuals think, behave, and make the choices they do. These formative experiences continue to inform his grounded and thoughtful approach to clinical work.
Johnnie has experience supporting children, adolescents, and families navigating significant stress, relational conflict, and mental health concerns. He has worked directly with youth facing substantial life transitions, including reintegration from home or program-based schooling into mainstream school environments. In these roles, Johnnie provided real-time behavioral coaching, supported emotional regulation, and helped foster healthy peer relationships during periods of adjustment. He has also worked one-on-one with youth transitioning into residential group home settings, assisting them in adapting to new environments, expectations, and social dynamics.
During his clinical training, Johnnie worked with families experiencing high levels of distress and provided direct support to clients presenting with complex and severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. He is familiar with the mechanisms underlying intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, and anxiety-driven avoidance, and collaborates with clients to develop structured, evidence-based intervention plans.
Having grown up in Calgary’s southeast and maintaining strong cultural ties to his Cambodian heritage, Johnnie brings cultural humility and sensitivity to his work with diverse individuals and families. He is attentive to the broader social, cultural, and systemic factors that shape mental health.
In therapy, Johnnie emphasizes reflection, accountability, and practical skill development. He integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and related evidence-based approaches to help clients better understand thought patterns, regulate emotions, and take meaningful steps toward values-driven change. Clients often describe him as calm, steady, and thoughtful; qualities that allow him to work effectively with complexity and intensity.
